Drivers' & Learners' Licenses

  1. The qualifying ages for learners' and drivers' licenses are as follows:
    • Application may be made for a learners' license and drivers' license for a motorcycle with an engine capacity of not more than 125cc (code 01) at the age of 16 years.
    • Applicants may apply for a light motor vehicle learners' license at the age of 17 years. However, the applicant may only be tested for a vehicle drivers' license at the age of 18 years.
    • An applicant must be 18 years of age before he applies for a learners' license for any other class of vehicle.
    • Learners' licenses are valid for a period of 18 months from the date of issue.

  2. The following documents are required when applying:
    • Learners' license: Identity document, or temporary identity document + 2 passport photos (black & white)
    • Drivers' license: Identity document as well as the applicant's learners' license + 4 passport photos (black & white)

  3. The cost for a learners' license test is R25 for the application. If the test is successful and a learners' license is issued, a further R20 is payable.

  4. In accordance with the Government Gazette 4055 of June 1992 the costs on application for drivers' licenses are as follows:
    • Motorcycles: code A1 or A = R80
    • Light motor vehicles: code B and EB or 12 = R100
    • Heavy vehicles: code C1, C, EC1, EC = R100

    An additional fee of R75 is payable if a license is issued.

  5. Learners' license tests can be taken at the following times: Monday - Friday : 08h00 - 15h15

Motor Vehicle Licenses

All vehicle licences have to be renewed annually at the Licensing Department offices, situated at the town hall in Napier Road.

Vehicle mass is determined at the testing grounds in Kruger Avenue, Lyttelton Manor Extension 4, and roadworthy test, if necessary, are also carried out there. Tel: (012) 671 7399.

The new testing grounds in Nellmapius Drive (near Kentron) for roadworthy tests of light and heavy vehicles as well as weigh bridge. Tel: (012) 671 7522/23.

Roads

Centurion can boast with a network of national, provincial and municipal roads; the latter alone covers 679 km.

Roadworthy Certificates

Vehicles can be tested for roadworthy certificates from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 13:00 and from 13:30 to 15:15.

The cost for this service is R45,00 per motor vehicle or trailer and R20,00 per motorcycle. If the test is successful and a certificate is issued, another R10,00 is payable. If the test is not successful, the testing official will grant a further grace period not exceeding 14 days. No further cost will be payable.
